Managing Partner (Market Development)
Dr. Gordon Sparks has in excess of 35 years of experience in contract
research and consulting in the area of transportation engineering, engineering
economics, asset management and decision analysis. He began his consulting
career in Alberta in the mid-1960’s. After gaining experience in highway design
and construction, he returned to university receiving a M.Sc. in 1969 and a
Ph.D. in 1971 from the University of California, Berkeley in transportation
engineering, statistics and operations research.
In 1971 he returned to Canada and accepted a position as Assistant Professor in
Civil Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan where he established an
active graduate and research program in transportation engineering.
In 1975, Dr. Sparks took an 18 month leave of absence from the university and
accepted the position of Director, Motor Carrier Administration with the Highway
Traffic Board. Also in 1975, Dr. Sparks joined Mr. Alan Clayton to form Clayton,
Sparks & Associates Ltd., a consulting firm that provided services to both
public and private sectors in the area of transportation, with an emphasis
on regulation and economics. Dr. Sparks has been continuously involved in
providing consulting and contract research services to Canadian and U.S. clients
since 1975.
Dr. Sparks joined Mr. Ray Gerke in 1994 to form VEMAX Management Inc. where he
now manages the R & D Division. In addition to his consulting, Dr. Sparks is
currently Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan where
he continues to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the area of
transportation, engineering economics and decision analysis.
Over the past 20 years, Dr. Sparks has directed a large number of projects
across a number of industries both in Canada and the U.S. The common feature of
many of these projects is the application of leading edge analysis in developing
practical solutions to important problems. His extensive practical experience
combined with his advanced academic background in engineering economics,
statistics, operations research, probabilistic modeling, and decision analysis
have enabled him to develop an international reputation for being able to
deliver practical research solutions.
